Biodynamic Vermicompost:

Bringing Life Back to the Soil

Introduction

At Casa Santanera, we understand biodynamic agriculture as a system in which soil, plants, animals, and the surrounding environment are part of a single living farm organism. Our vermicompost is born from this idea: transforming organic matter from the farm into living humus to restore fertility, structure, and biological activity to the soil.

01 · Closing the Cycle

The process begins with stabilized cattle manure, plant material from the farm, and earthworms that progressively transform this organic matter into stable, nutrient-rich humus. Rather than treating these materials as waste, we return them to the agricultural cycle. What comes from the land returns to the land, transformed.

02 · Why Biodynamic?

Earthworms alone do not make compost biodynamic. Its biodynamic character comes from integrating the process into a broader system of biodynamic farming. Our approach incorporates the principles of biodynamic agriculture, preparations used in compost management, and the observation of natural rhythms considered within biodynamic practice. Every intervention is documented through a detailed log recording dates, temperatures, moisture, materials, preparations, and the evolution of the process. At the same time, we measure agronomic variables to objectively evaluate the quality of the humus and its effects on our crops. Biodynamic principles guide the process. Observation and measurement allow us to understand it.

03 · From Earthworm to Seed

The first destination for this humus will be our nursery of Agave tequilana Weber var. azul, where we grow blue agaves from seed. We will evaluate different proportions of vermicompost in the growing medium and document their effects on germination, survival, leaf development, plant vigor, and root growth. In this way, each generation of agave can carry a traceable history that begins long before it reaches a bottle: with the seed, the soil, and the way we choose to farm.

04 · Soil That Does More Than Feed. Soil That Lives.

Our goal is not simply to replace a conventional fertilizer with an organic one. We are working to build living soils with greater organic matter, improved structure, better water-holding capacity, and increased biological activity. Because for us, the quality of tequila does not begin at the distillery.

It begins years earlier, in the relationship between the agave and the soil in which it grows.

Quality isn’t manufactured. It’s cultivated.

SEPTEMBER 2026 BIODYNAMIC MANAGEMENT

More Than Vermicompost

Earthworms alone do not make compost biodynamic.

Our vermicompost becomes part of Casa Santanera’s biodynamic farming program through the way the system is managed: integrating organic matter into the farm organism, incorporating biodynamic compost preparations, observing the natural rhythms considered within biodynamic agriculture, and documenting each intervention.

Biodynamic principles guide the process, while agronomic measurements allow us to observe, compare, and understand its results.
